With Gordon Brown taking a well earned rest from the stresses of the highest public office in the country, the Labour Party have begun their search for a new progressive leader. The candidates have started to emerge. The first to declare was David Miliband. David Miliband 44, called for a comradely contest. He said:

Members of the public and university students will have the opportunity to question candidates for the Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency at parliamentary hustings at Keele University. The event, organised by Keele University Students’ Union, will be held on Friday, April 30, at 7:30pm. It will focus on the future of higher education, but there will also be an opportunity to debate local and national political issues.

Reports are reaching us that the NEC and Regional Office of the Labour Party are trying to impose an all woman shortlist on Stoke-on-Trent Central following Mark Fisher MP's decision to stand down on health grounds. The NEC and the regional officers will also have a massive say on who goes forward to the Constituency for selection. Members of the NEC and the Regional Office will advertise the Vacancy.

By Mike Rawlins 12.00pm update We have heard that the Hustings for the new Council Leader which were due to take place in private, have now been cancelled becuase the candidates are unable to agree on whether the public and media should be allowed in. It is alleged that Chris Harman the interim Chief Executive has said that if the media and public are to be present, the hustings will NOT be held in council buildings and will NOT be arranged by the Council Peter Kent-Baguley has said:
