Four events, including a torchlight night, at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery form part of London’s 2012 Open Weekend (23 – 25 July 2010). The events in the city are part of a series of activities across the country which will take place to celebrate the final two years until the London 2012 Olympic Games and to provide access to excellence in the arts, culture and sport.

Following an exhibition at the city’s museum where residents were encouraged to highlight their favourite design a judging panel of experts has picked Light Source to mark the centenary occasion.

Stoke-on-Trent City Councillors are to be asked to support an application which would see the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and its collections of ceramics gain national accreditation. Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s cabinet will this month (23 June) be recommended to support the application which is to be made to the national Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has commissioned a sculpture to celebrate the city’s centenary and is asking city communities to unite in choosing their favourite design and residents are being asked to vote to help choose which piece will be commissioned. The 4 designs will go on display at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery from 1000 tomorrow (Fri 4 June) and residents will have until 11 June to vote on which one they prefer.

Stoke-on-Trent Museums have children’s activities for your family to enjoy this half-term. At Gladstone Pottery Museum visitors can find out about Edwardian Toys and Games such as books of optical illusions and dolls and make a paper toy to take home. The drop-in activity takes place on Tuesday 1 June ,11am - 4pm and costs just 50p plus admission. At Ford Green Hall kids can put together a mask of Henry the Eighth or one of his six wives in Masks and Monarchs.

Fashion fans can catch a glimpse of the changing face of clothing at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery as part of a one night showcase. Fashion through the Ages takes a look at how costume has changed throughout the centuries. Visitors can explore clothing from the stone age through the court of Henry VIII until the basic practical wear of World War II.

The Art Fund is delighted to announce that the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest archaeological Anglo-Saxon find ever unearthed, has been saved for the nation. The news comes after the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), the government’s fund of last resort for heritage items at risk, pledged £1,285,000 – bringing the campaign to the £3.3m target, just over three weeks ahead of schedule.

Residents are being given the chance to attend the premiere of the first in-depth documentary on the biggest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold treasure ever discovered. An exhibition of artwork inspired by the city’s past will be officially opened this weekend (Saturday March 13) at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. The exhibition, entitled Stoke through Time – an expression of a new generation, was created by young people who visited the city’s four museums. From their visits they produced a range of multi-media artwork which will now go on display between March 13 and April 25, 2010.
