People can find out more about the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard at a talk at Newcastle Library on Monday March 15.

The library is playing host to Ian Wykes, Cultural Environment Group Leader as he talks about the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon Gold ever found.

From 7.30pm, Ian, who is employed by Staffordshire County Council, will discuss how he led the excavation of treasure which included hilts of swords, fragments from helmets and Christian crosses from the land on 5 July 2009, following its discovery by Terry Herbert.

Local county councillor Steven Sweeney said:

Quote:
"The Hoard contains some of the finest Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship ever seen, which went undiscovered for 1,400 years.

"This is a great opportunity for people to find out more about a magnificent medieval discovery."

Tickets for this event cost £4, with all proceedings being donated to the Staffordshire Hoard Appeal Fund – a fundraising campaign for the joint acquisition of the hoard by the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Copies of “The Staffordshire Hoard” book, published by the British Museum will also be on sale.

For more information, or to book a place on this event, people should contact Newcastle Library on 01782 297300 or email newcastle.library@staffordshire.gov.uk.
