Staffordshire Business Leaders Predict Growth And Better Job Prospects – Major New Survey Reveals

A new survey today gave hope for thousands of Staffordshire residents hit hard by the recession.

Three in every four Staffordshire bosses expect to see turnover increase over the next couple of years and a third are looking to hire new staff according to wide reaching research by survey specialists Step Beyond.

The snapshot of attitudes among Staffordshire employers provides a ray of hope for a county which has suffered badly during the global downturn with a 154 per cent increase in Job Seekers’ Allowance claimants (see notes to editors).

Step Beyond, based in Stone, surveyed more than 100 managers throughout the County.

The research revealed:

Three out of four companies expect turnover to increase in the next two years

One in three expect to take on more staff this year

One in two businesses have found trading conditions tough in the past two years – but one in five have actually enjoyed favourable market conditions and the remainder say it hasn’t been ‘too bad’

Over half of Staffordshire businesses are confident that their market sector is starting to recover

Penny Meigh, Research Director at Step Beyond, said:

Quote:
"The survey shows that managers are looking to a brighter future and perhaps finally signals the end of the recession. Businesses are however looking for more government support in giving them tax breaks and reducing National Insurance, while also wanting the deficit to be cut significantly. The forthcoming budget will therefore be critical.

"The survey has also revealed that the great majority of companies see marketing as being fundamental to their performance to help them identify new opportunities, win new customers and retain existing ones”

Research experts Step Beyond

Research experts Step Beyond predict that businesses in Staffordshire are likely to grow and create new jobs, it would be easy to be cynical about this, haven’t there been a few too many false dawns for us all to be taken in again?

That would be missing the point because Stoke has the land available and the transport links to attract high quality jobs in technology and manufacturing to the area. What we don’t have though is the skilled workforce to do those new jobs; people need the opportunity to update their skills, something they won’t have the opportunity to do if savage cuts are imposed on Stoke-on-Trent College and Staffs University.

If we, as a city, are going to get out of the economic doldrums business leaders and the council need to work together to protect further and higher education funding in this city from being cut to ribbons when Chancellor George Osborne unveils his emergency budget next week.

Do that and Stoke might at last be in a position to step beyond being a low wage economy.

Just to say the survey was in

Just to say the survey was in no way politically motivated or funded and the comments are based upon what business leaders told us - we haven't made them up!! In addition, interviews were held with companies all round the Staffordshire, not just Stoke.

I know Stoke has had a really really tough time, and continues to do so, and truly hope it receives the support it needs.

I suppose the first response

I suppose the first response is a cynical one but we have to think of ways in which the entrepreneurial spirit of the area can be reawakened. I set up Regenerate Stoke as a Facebook community and after 2 wqeeks we have over 200 people on it who are reading and contributing ideas

I quite agree Bill! Stokies

I quite agree Bill! Stokies are in my experience fantastic people, and to reawaken their hope and entrepreneurial spirit would be brilliant, so well done on starting the Facebook page. I do a lot of social research and I do genuinely think that the local authorities and central government are starting to use it in the way it should be - listening to what people want & their ideas and then taking action to try to implement them. Long may it continue...

I'm glad that you think so.

I'm glad that you think so. But we have to address some of the problems of the area and concentrate on renewal based on some and new ideas that we have to make the world anew
